Laugh and Think

The Annals of Improbable Research (a scientific humor magazine) bestows Ig Nobel Prizes (ignoble, get it?) for eccentric but practical achievements that "first make people laugh, and then make them think."

This year they honored
armadillo archaeology findings... researchers examined the hugely disruptive effects of these animals' burrowing activity on the distribution of items in an archeological site.

Other winners' work revolve around the placebo effect or the self-fulfilling prophecy. For example, one behavioral economist's study found that more expensive fake medications work better than less expensive fake medications.
