Hankering to see baby animals but can't get to the zoo? The Web site ZooBorns has your fix! There are hundreds of adorable pictures on here for all kinds of animals, from ferrets and red pandas to wallabies and gorillas.
You can sort images by animal or by zoo/aquarium. The site is regularly updated to report baby animal births from around the U.S. (see the gorilla, I mean infant, reported in the Dec. 12 posting). And you can also learn what certain animals are called when they're babies. [Partridge = cheeper; platypus = puggle]

In other news regarding the animal kingdom, there's a new study in Science showing that elephants in zoos live shorter lives than their counterparts in the wild and that bringing elephants into zoos "impairs their viability." (There's stress, obesity, diseases...just like with humans.) But other experts are criticizing the results. Read the New York Times piece here.
