Acorn Paucity and Hyper Squirrels

At first I thought she was joking, but my friend in Washington, D.C., was completely serious when she commented that the squirrels in her backyard lately have taken to "jumping about like acrobats and acting exceedingly and somewhat abnormally hyper." I live in a concrete jungle and rarely glimpse any sign of animal life besides pigeons and rodents, so I can't corroborate my friend's claim. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled while in Florida for this phenomenon.
